Opposites attract

AJ got a letter from his new kindergarten teacher last week. She sent her picture Xeroxed along with the letter and an enormous list of school supplies that we must mark with AJs name. (Really, do I need to write his name on each and every crayon and marker? The instructions say I do. Oy.).

AJ will be in afternoon kindergarten next year, along with all the other kindergarteners from our neighborhood, save one who asked for mornings. Most of the kids are in the other kindergarten class, but AJ was thrilled to learn he will share a class with The Girl Next Door for yet another year (thats three out of their first four years in school).

AJ was particularly excited about having to buy gym shoes and a T-shirt with his name on it in 2 inch letters. The school seems to be under the impression that someone in this house uses an iron. While I have horrific memories of gym uniforms past, AJ cant believe he has the good fortune to have gym class. And art class. And music class. Did I mention hes excited about kindergarten?

What I really wish they had was science class. On last weeks library trip, he checked out a video from The Way Things Work series on electricity and also a Bill Nye Science Guy video on space that AJ has been watching incessantly, as Im sure RS will attest she gamely watched the latter several times while she was here. Today we checked out David MacCauleys The New Way Things Work and it appears that AJ intends to read it from cover to cover. For his pre-nap storytime, AJ requested that I read the section on electricity, which he listened to with great excitement while enacting the transfer of electrons with his vibrating fists. I hope his teacher next year is smart.
