I don't believe in Peter Pan, Frankenstein or Superman

[Crossposted at my new address: spynotes.wordpress.com

Mr. Spy and AJ packed his bike into the car early this morning and drove down to the nice flat street by the river so AJ can try to ride. AJ has been very tormented by his bicycle. On the one hand, he wants to know how to ride without training wheels like his friends. And he had enough fun on a bicycle with training wheels when we visited my parents in March that he knows how much fun pedaling somewhere under his own power can be. On the other hand, he's terrified of falling over, even though he's done it a couple of times already and nothing terrible happened. AJ has remarkably quick reflexes and is able to hop off a falling bike and out of the way in the blink of an eye.

I've been trying to stay out of the bike riding thing. I taught AJ how to skate. I know what that was like (hard) and how long it took (a long time) and how worthwhile it was for both of us (just watch us skimming over the ice playing tag and you'll know). The bike was Mr. Spy's domain. Which is why I wasn't there when AJ rode his bike unassisted for the very first time this morning.

They came back and AJ was breathless and excited. He demonstrated by pedaling around the driveway and we cheered. A celebratory trip to the doughnut shop is imminent. Because it's too early for ice cream.
