Katie so much wants to do big girl things, but she also wants to help Kristin do things since she already did them, so spends a lot of time playing with the baby toys, and telling Kristin HOW to play with them. But thou shalt not rearrange her My Little Pony dolls.

Wow. Kids are amazing, that they can be so grown up and yet so young. The wallet story is adorable!

Yes, I miss all the old Dusty's that came before. Lately, though, she wants to be a baby rather than a big kid. I think she wants the kind of physical attention her sister gets because she can't do the things Dusty can do. Then, she wants to be really old. Like six. You can't win.

How much does a 5 year old get for allowance these days? I want to see what inflation has done since the mid-1970's. Are there obligations that go along with allowance?

That's some dream. I can definitely relate. It reminds me of watching a performance of some orchestral piece, the title of which now eludes me, which requires the percussionist to hit an anvil (you must know which piece this is). The student orchestra played it when we were in Ann Arbor. I remember the percussionist in question raising a sledge hammer many measures before the necessary stroke, getting ready, building momentum. It was very exciting.

Claudia, AJ likes to play baby sometimes too. He crawls around on the floor and makes baby noises. It drives me insane, but he's always thought fondly of babyness, even if he doesn't remember it. I think it's also about contact and about security. And RS, the going rate varies wildly. One of his friends gets $5 a week, which I think is too much. I got a quarter a week at 5, I think. We're thinking about $1. We're also trying to figure out how to encourage him to save some of it. We might give him extra to do that, or we might offer to match anything he puts in the bank. But it will be slow going -- mostly he likes to play with money. He'd rather have 10 pennies than a quarter because there are more, even though he knows the difference in value. It's one thing to know how many pennies each coin is worth; it's another thing altogether to understand the practical difference in value. Cheap toys are often just as exciting as expensive ones, so it can be hard to tell. As for obligations, we're not tying it to any particular obligations, although it could be docked as punishment at some point in the future. We are, however, billing allowance as a privilege and responsibility associated with his advancing age. Other responsibilities will also be asked of him -- things like keeping his room clean, taking care of his fish, setting the table, etc. They're mostly things he does already, but we're trying to be a little more orderly about it, in part so he can feel good about what he does instead of just having me nag him all the time. He's anxious to be a big boy and also to pitch in, so I think he'll take this in the spirit in which it is intended, not as a punishment. At least, I hope so. Otherwise we're likely to have a lot more days of babytalk around here.

My niece turned five today. She loves to write and asked for paper, pencils and "ideas". S. and I created a little personalized writing set for her which included school-type paper (with the broken line), pencils, a pencil case and some other writerly things. I can't wait to get something from her.

I just love AJ's job description! How many five year olds come up with such an ingenius answer? Ironic though, isn't it? Most of us spend the majority of our childhood *DYING* to become adults, only appreciating the early years when we realize being grown-up is nothing like what's advertised in the brochure.

Cassie's business cards say "Executive Assistant to the Management of Ponce Landing" and she loves it! It is a big title for a job that basically makes your boss feel important. I know, I once had such a title! Maybe AJ can find a special leaf or such to put in his wallet for good luck!
