For a beautiful story about what is a soul, read Lord Dunsany�s The Kith of the Elf-Folk (http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a1470.pdf starting at page 16). This is one of my favourite stories ever and, for obvious reasons, I think it would make a great opera.

Wow. Got that one bookmarked for more leisurely reading. I love this kind of stuff. If I was a "lady of leisure" (and how ironic would that be?), I'd go back to school and study women's studies and history and the like.
