There are a number of women pirates in history and perhaps you could work in the whole "passing as a man" thing as one way women freed themselves from the tyranny of womanhood back in the day. Clearly, pirating opened up many more opportunities than embroidery work or pottery.

You could work an enigmatic quote about pirates into your dissertation as some kind of preamble. My advisor did that with some sort of saying on Old English.

I guarantee you a dissertation is not in my future. I simply do not have that much to say about *anything*. Not exactly a deep thinker. No ideas on the pirate reference but I would be very glad to hear that you've accomplished such a reference!
