In theory, I like the idea of unschooling and other such holistic learning but unfortunately, most children aren't AJ and most parents are you - they aren't educated and well-tuned in to their child. They live in homes with no books and a television on 24 hrs a day so they've not even had the opportunity to figure out what they know and how to know it. Sometimes I sympathize with fascist-type (well, that's probably not the term I'm looking for) educational theories that remove children altogether from their environment and teach them in a different one - nature immersion, etc. But, that doesn't work either, taking children from their parents even if they aren't ideal parents because, really, who's determining good and bad? I did a lot of study into educational theories in grad school - fascinating stuff - but most of it's gone from my brain now.
