Man, tell me about it. I feel like I get news like that every single day.

The Alumnae Quarterly is the single-most depressing publication I get. (And I get the NTSB Reporter (reports aircraft accidents).) At least you have a graduate degree and a soon-to-be-finished dissertation (complete with pirate reference) to show for the last umpteen years! Unlike the grad school dropout writing this comment. Hang in there.

Is the feeling mutual?

I don't think so, at least not in the same way. This person is generally very competitive and is not very collegial about sharing information or work with anyone and yet has been described as a generous person repeatedly by my friends and colleagues (this is the part that I find mysterious and it is what makes me think that this is my problem rather than something this person does in particular). I would be surprised if I've been identified as a rival by this person in the same way because I'd be surprised if the person was paying that much attention. But I'm not certain. Perhaps a mutual rivalry accounts for my reactions that are so different than those of others I know whos opinions I generally trust.
