That open-hearted, totally accepting friendship *is probably the best thing you can do for N, at least. Normalcy is dearly bought in that household, I'm sure. Dinner from time to time, brought over with a very non-sentimental pragmatic feeling, would probably be appreciated too. Just a matter of fact, "Made some extra _________ and thought you might have a use for it!" completely ignoring the fact that you seem to also have made extra salad, bread, green beans, whatever. Just a thought based on my mom's experience with my aunt.

Not long after the "Gang of Four" moment,a friend asked why I felt so peaceful. "Well, my life isn't as I'd hoped, but it sure could be a whole lot worse..." and I hope that I would have the same grace in such a terrible, painful yet meaningful time... thanks for the reminder
