Not having seen a picture of a polyphemus moth, I can only assume that it has an "eye" of sorts on its wings. Good luck! It sounds like an interesting experiment.

How exciting! Porch seems like a good solution -- Have you read -- I think it's Annie Dillard's American Childhood, possibly -- something about a school; a luna moth in a jar; it hatches and needs to open its wings right away and can't because it's in a jar, so is sort of ruined. So -- make sure it's in a big enough container so that when it hatches it can spread its wings right away!

How fun! In Jr High, I had a childcare class, and we ran a preschool. We had caterpillars in our room that coccooned and then turned into butterflies.
