I totally understand AJ's fear of dogs. I prefer cats to dogs because cats to not propel themselves at you when they detect you. I do not like things that lunge at me - regardless of how harmless it may be - without my asking for it. I don't like the loudness of them or the smell or the big wet sloppy tongue of a dog. Cats saunter over when they're ready. They are not intimidating, normally. Dogs that rush over to me, uninvited, that jump on me, frighten me as much as if a crocdile suddenly slithered out of a lake and came for me, unprovoked. There's something attack-like about a dog that makes me want to run. And running antagonizes dogs - makes them worse. So, I totally feel for AJ. Eventually he'll get to a point where he no longer cries and runs and hides from them, but he's got to work it out for himself. Good luck.

At AJs age and younger I was terrified of dogs. If I saw one walking down the street a block away I not only cried I insisted whatever adult I was with not only pick me up but cross to the otherside of the street so we didn't have to even pass the dog. At a playground once I was at the top of a slide and went into hysterics because on the other side of the park I saw a dog and I refused to come down from the top of the slide. I eventually got over that kind of reaction but I'm still jumpy around dogs. Her highness on the other hand LOVES dogs and isn't even intimidated by big scary police dogs. I've actually had to work with her so that she doesn't just approach every dog she sees. Don't get me started about how neurotic I'd get if she was ever going to be around Kevin's pit bulls.

I must admit that even now I harbour a teensy fear of dogs, mostly having to do with the fact that they have sharp teeth and I really don't know what they're thinking. I have also met some dogs who were not nice to strangers. However, I might suggest a way for you to ease AJ out of this irrational fear is to take him to the pet shop to look at the birds and the fish and the iguanas and the kittens and, of course, the puppies.

Your talk on boxes is very interesting! Very cool insight. I am personally freaked out by dogs and was reeallly scared of them as a child. I guess it was the lack of control I felt I had over getting the dog to do what I said, i.e. not maul me. You can tell a person to please not bite you, but I never learned how to get a dog to agree to that!
