It's hard, not foisting your own encrustations (for lack of the proper word; just wait till you hit 45, it'll start happening to you) automatically on your children. I hear my mother-in-law do it all the time. As a matter of fact, I cringed when she said these kind of racist (and she's not a racist by any means) remarks around my kids when they were wee. Just recently she was reminiscing on how her son, my husband, had wanted to be the next Jimi Hendrix when he was a teenager and she said, "You can be the next Jimi Hendrix; if you haven't noticed, he's black!" So, yeah, we want our kids to accept everything with an open mind and not come equipped with little, narrow boxes into which to compartmentalize things before they've even experienced them. But, sadly, they do pick these notions up, either from other relatives, teachers, friends, or friends' parents. I think you're doing a great job. The most important moral and ethical foundation is laid at home.

That should have read "can't". Oops!

Oh, Katie hates it when Liz and I start chuckling over a serious comment that she made. She HATES it!

here, here! I just think of the preconceptions that I grew up with because of my parents - but also the preconceptions I developed on my own because I drew faulty conclusions based on my environment (kind of like AJ just did - based on my grandparents, I thought that you naturally became religious when you got old and wanted to get into heaven.) You seem to have a nice mix for AJ.

"rummaging around a pile of Josquin scores" - made me laugh until I cried. 1) I know about J des P. 2) I have seen scores of his work. 3) I am a nerd - but a happy one.

Too bad you guys aren't closer. I'm still looking for singers to help me out with an in-class performance of excerpts from Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua. And lemming, I believe your husband sang from at least one of these scores at some point!
