There is a beautiful thing known as the photo roster. The registrar sends you your class list with copies of each student's ID photos. It helps a lot for those of us who are not so swift to put names to faces.

Thanks for your comment. What my union rep is most upset about is that I'm not getting support from my own department. The chair is too inexperienced to deal with this effectively, and has this crazy attitude that "the student is always right". I think he also likes the idea that I'm being screwed, even though I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, but I haven't seen any indication otherwise. The university itself is so bent on "retention at all costs" that they're lowering their own standards by graduating people who shouldn't. I guess it's bad all over. This is just a microcosm of the larger national and international picture.
