:) I am married to a guitar player. And, Dusty's getting one for her birthday. I played piano and can't for the life of me figure out the guitar. What is that box? Is that a note?

The folk mass. What an abomination. Generally in the basement, too, where there aren't even any windows to look at.

Are you sure that you didn't wander into the Unitarians by accident? It sounds funny.

Oh god, my very first experience at a Catholic church was an Easter folk mass, and I was horrified. This was in 1976. I needed to attend an Anglican church to get the bad taste out of my mouth. As for the guitar, I grew up when everyone learned how to play guitar. House of the Rising Sun was one of my standards, plus almost anything by Phil Ochs and Joni Mitchell. Sigh. My guitar is now on a stand in the living room and my son and husband both fool around on it. My fingers are too soft and I've forgotten how to fingerpick. But I keep telling myself that it's not too late to pick it up again.

My college boyfriend played acoustic guitar, and insisted earnestly that he was MUCH better when he'd had a few drinks. He, um, wasn't.

Geez. Did they sing Kum-Ba-Yah, perchance? Or I Believe In Music?

The parish/Newman Center/university cultural center I attended as an undergrad actually had a good guitar/folk Mass. Yes, you saw that right -- I believe that there is such a thing as a good guitar Mass. It's not always my favorite cup of tea, but I do believe it can be done well. I've seen it done well. The key to a good guitar Mass is, as with so many other things, the amount of money and effort you want to sink into it. If you want a traditional Mass choir, you need to invest in a good choir director who is able to attract good people and get the ensemble in shape. If you want a good guitar Mass, you need pretty much the same thing. Parishes rarely seem to believe this though. They always seem to think that "oh we do a guitar Mass with players from the congregation and a bunch of Dan Schutte, Marty Haugen, and Bob Dufford tunes." Of course, at an equally annoying point of the spectrum as the guitar Mass is something I attended once called the "Teen Life Mass" -- the guitar Mass "goes electric". It's hard to have a reflective moment during a Mass when the bass player needs to take the amp down off "11".

I have never, ever heard a good guitar Mass and I have been to more bad guitar Masses than anyone ought ever be afflicted with. I am glad to hear, Dr. Geek, that someone has. At least it was so bad as to be funny, Harriet. Sometimes, it's merely excruciating. Actually, other than the Catholic church we now attend, the music at most Catholic churches is lousy. There must be a book for Catholic organists out there that says, "thou shalt play every hymn like a dirge" and "thou shalt schedule thy choir to sing schlock." It's too bad; there is such gorgeous church music out there.
