What is appealing to me about unschooling (and homeschooling in general) is that kids are given the opportunity (hopefully) to learn in a way that maximizes their potential. I know that we're all supposed to conform to society's rules and learn how to negotiate situations that don't necessarily suit us, but it'd be so great if every kid could get a firm footing before being knocked around in the system.

I like your perspective on school being a social experience for AJ, and continuing his "unschooling" at home as well. My mom homeschooled all four of us kids, and although I think my education was good, I definitely suffered socially. It seems like school plus involved parents is the way to go.
