Oy! I think you need a healer to come and burn happy incense in every room. Or, consider a feng shui fix - figure out where electronics should best go. I feel your pain. Our wonderful 13 yr old Sony is slowly dying tho I'm hoping to get another year out of it. I recommend Sony. I've loved this tv, lugged it to 4 different homes, and I don't usually feel that way about big black electronic eyes. And, tvs are cheaper than laptops.

I realize you are looking for a quick solution, and not a life-altering decision...HOWEVER, your experience with Mac laptops sounds abominable. I don't really have an opinion on the Mac vs. PC debate, but I've had laptops since 2001 and even with your heavy usage I feel like they should be holding up much better than they are. Either that or ThinkPads are truly in their own class. Envision my graduating class of 55 teenaged girls being outfitted with $2200 (Cad) laptops. A recipe for disaster, nu? For all of the accidental sitting on, entire coffee cup's worth of spillage, Kazaa + napster + entire video libraries worth of illegal downloads, and they have all held up fine. At one point I even dropped mine down four flights of stairs (as in I tripped and fell down the stairs; I managed to stop at the first landing while sadly the computer did not) and it has survived. The only reason I got a new one for when I started college was because that one was on lease, and I had to pay an extra $500 to own. Just food for thought I wanted to share. I know that doesn't really help you if you love Macs.

Oh, and with the TV situation it seems like everyone I know has been having the best results with random, never-heard-of-them before el cheapo brands. That or Costco. Our RCA totally freaked out last year; the infrared signal receiver died so it does not work with any remotes whatsoever.

Staecie -- it's not so much that I'm so in love with Macs as that I've never really used anything else. Moreover, my field really doesn't use anything else. So I'm pretty much stuck with Macs, for now anyway. That's a good tip about the TV, though. And Claudia, that 1979 TV? A Sony. My dad swears that any time he's bought anything else that it has been a piece of crap. But last time we were in the market for a TV, I went with Consumer Reports' recommendation. And look where that got me. I noticed that my favorite electronics store has the Sony recommended by CR on sale on 2/11, but I'm pretty sure we're going to need to replace this TV before the Super Bowl. After all, the local team hasn't been in the Bowl for 21 years. The boys aren't going to put up with the 13", 28-year-old TV for that, I don't think.

That's all just bizarro. Can you do an exorcism? I'm worried for you.

eek, I sold my 2-yr-old phillips when I left NYC. Nice to know I escaped! ANd, I'm with you on consumer reports. I've gotten some crappy advice from them. It seems to me that if you have the funds, you deserve to treat yourself to a new and solid computer, given the amount of work you do on it. You don't have to buy suits for your line of work. You DO need a good computer. In the absence of $$, I can say that we've recently had great success with used and refurbished machines, but I don't know if that works for Macs. good luck!!!

To say that I have a love affair with Macs and that they have proved 100 times more durable than IBM-clones would be an understatement. Nonetheless, I am suspicious about your epidemic; the TV can no longer be turned off on the set. Finding the remte so as to turn it on, of, change channel... well, not one of my gifts. Perhaps less TV is a good thing?

Good glory, Harriet! You're just cursed, aren't you? If I ever come visit, remind me to leave my laptop at home!! I love my laptop, btw. I've had really awful luck with Dells so this time I bought a Fujitsu - expensive but worth it. I looked at the Macs but I couldn't afford to replace my Adobe creative suite.
