I believe you have hit on the true difference between the academic and the child where the scientific method is concerned. The academic may find paper writing annoying, but is excited by the thought that "hey, I found out something interesting and it will be great to tell everyone about it". The child loves the part of actually doing the science, but then is bored by the presentation (at least I was). I think A.J. will come to appreciate more aspects of the process as time goes on.

Yes, to my kids too it always seemed enough to have actually done the experiment -- one year N had masses of kids over to play Monopoly to figure out the probability of landing on certain squares. That was kind of fun -- some properties are definitely better than others. For her board we xeroxed Monopoly cards and pasted them all over, but then she mispelled something ... probability? ... in the title. Very sad. M's best was a test to determine which shape of parachute worked best. We made N figure out the areas, because she's good at that. Her board had lovely little yellow parachutes all over it. But one terrible year N grew smelly molds and tried to give them sunburns, and it didn't work, and she didn't want to redo the experiment and besides, they really did smell very bad.
