I've been thinking about the strange interaction with the woman who worried that your work was encroaching on her own -- it's hard for me to really judge, since I'm only going on what you've written here. But to me it seems that she's being overly sensitive. It seems to me that you should be able to publish your paper, should you want to. People don't get to stake out territory and not let anyone else come near it -- people write things and then others come along and build from what they've written. And it sounds like you certainly cited her adequately. I don't know -- it's not a big thing, but it seems that she's being unfair, and I also don't think you ought to be scared away from an area if you are interested in working on it more.
