I'm liking this Everyday Mathematics more and more. Sounds like something that would have helped me. I still cannot subtract two numbers if I have to borrow. I go to the calculator. But I like logic and puzzles.

I loved this story--it is a great example. It also reminded me of the graphing of a function that gets closer to the x-axis but never touches it. Now I can spend some time trying to remember what function that is.

Back to say that I was thinking of an asymptote...yay, memory.

I saw those comments! Thanks. I've written down your suggestion and Libby's (she's the one who gave me some book titles for our list). I don't get notifications, for some reason, but hotmail's down today anyway.

Not for nothin', but I sent you a classic Raspberries video.

Wow. Grasping the concept of infinity. Is he old enough for that? I like your explanation, too.

Heheh: fifth grade, me with a penny, showing the entire lunch table that gravity is impossible because of infinity, but it manges anyway. This, along with Jell-O (which didn't fit anyplace in our solids, liquids, gasses experiments), and the concept I introduced of the reality of things we can't see (if we're in the lunchroom, does the classroom still exist?), most of my friends were in a quandry: what was real, and what was just perception and what were we supposed to believe?

Claudia, I'll be interested to see how Everyday Math works in practice. Anything that causes a ruckus has got to have some merits. RS, I had absolutely no recollection of the meaning of asymptote and had to go look it up. I think I'm in trouble. Smed, you rock! Julia, I've tried to sopt asking "is he old enough?" because apparently he has his own ideas about age-appropriate behavior. As long as he's not smoking, drinking or reading internet porn, I'm feeling okay wiith it. And Katie, I love it when science and philosophy merge. That's where all the good stuff is.
