Any chance that they took photos? Please tell Mr. Spy that his foray into bloggerville requires photos of all important events.

Believe it or not, there exists an abridged version of Moby Dick which my mother-in-law gave to my son (he was older than AJ, but that shouldn’t make a difference) and for quite a while it became his favourite book.

Sorry, I just laughed at the vision of someone learning to fish out of a book. My father taught me to fish when I was four or five- I don't go often, but it seems like such a second nature thing. Don't use worms, or, if it just doesn't seem like fishing without worms, make sure to impale the little guys with the hook (I know, it's gross and sadistic, but the hook has to be imbedded in the bait or the fish'll steal it). Try mini marshmallows, or cheese. Fish love both, and mini marshmallows especially are very hard to remove without the fish hooking himself. Instead of casting straight back over yourself, try an abridged version of sidecasting (you don't need a "sidecasting" reel for this, that's a completely different thing). The idea is the same as regular casting, except that instead of swinging it back over your head like you always see on television, cast horizontally across your body from the waist or hip and out- let the line out just before the rod comes vertical. This is easier because it's possible to watch your rod while you cast and it also ensures that you are the correct distance from your fellow anglers. Practice in your backyard with just a weight on the end instead of a hook. (If you have some plastic fish decoys for the lawn to cast towards, you may never have to *really* take AJ fishing again.) Long enough, but I hope some of that was useful.

I had only one successful fishing venture when I was about ten. We were in a boat in the Atlantic Ocean and I hooked to flounders at once! They unfortunately got left behind in the freezer when we went home so I never got to eat what I caught.
