Old friends sat on their park bench like bookends

We took AJ bowling yesterday afternoon after school and I have never been so sorry to have failed to bring a camera. AJ was very excited about the pint-sized bowling shoes. He shuffled and slid all over the floor as he waited for his turn. He solemnly typed his name into the scoring machine and then leaned over my shoulder to make sure I spelled Mommy and Daddy correctly.

Although the place had teeny, tiny bowling shoes that fit AJ perfectly, there wasnt a ball that AJ could lift easily. He threw his whole body into lifting the ball off the machine and carried it carefully to the end of the lane where he would get on his knees behind the ball and push it with all his might down the middle of the lane. Youve never seen a bowling ball move so slowly. As it rolled, he lay flat on his stomach, his legs stretched back, and his arms stretched forward as if to will the ball on. He is very proud of his first bowling score: 38. Everytime anyone would knock anything down, no matter how pathetic the roll, AJ would pump one fist in the air, dance a short jig in his fancy shoes and shout enthusiastically, "Good job!"

That was pretty much the highlight of our anniversary. Also, my husband made me a fabulous salmon and scallop dinner (and he doesnt even like scallops) and brought home a bottle of fancy schmancy champagne. We drank it while watching Knute Rockne, All American, which has to be one of the worst acted movies of all time (which is exactly why it was so entertaining) and the end of The Godfather saga. Who says you need to leave the house to have fun?
